Start your own blog in 6 easy steps for free!
March 25, 2018We’ve been reading a lot of blog posts lately
A lot, like almost an unhealthy amount. It got us to thinking about why we blog, why others do it, and how we could help people along the way. This is a cornerstone article in a series we’ll be continuing on, blogs and blogging. This is one of the quickest, free way to start your very own blog with no programming required and built in writing tools like spell check and more.
What do you want to know about blogging?
There’s so much fun in keeping a web log. We’ve been writing online for almost 5 years on various topics and we really want to help other people that are interested. We’re planning on covering writing guidelines, tips, tricks, the nerdy stuff around hosting and content management and add in tools to solve all different kinds of problems. Comment on this post to let us know about topics or questions you’re interested in.
But first- Why blog anyway?
Depending on who you ask blogging has been popular for more than 20 years. There are blogs for every topic you can imagine. There are professional bloggers and amateur hobby bloggers. There are bloggers who don’t have their own website and those that have built famous followings. But why do they do it? What’s the point? One simple answer could be, that it’s a form of expression. You get to write about what you’re interested in for those that are interested. Like a performer or artist or author. It’s a creative thing. Another answer might be financial. Blogging can generate income (although most bloggers we know don’t cover the cost of their websites). Yet another answer (mostly in the case of leafbabies.com) could be as a way to interact with people of similar interests. There are likely even more motivations for people to spill their guts all over the internet. If you have one we didn’t mention, let us know about it in the comments section.
Six steps to your very own blog
Okay you’re probably thinking now… boooorrring! Wait, don’t click the back button yet. How about if we get you started on your own blog like super fast and FREE? Still reading? We’re going to skip all the really important stuff like having a subject area and knowing who you want to write for and whether you want to make money, and give you the short short version.
in fact here’s an infographic overview for you
1 ) Go over to https://wordpress.com and click on the Get Started button(don’t worry that’ll open in a new tab, you won’t lose your place) and fill out the form. Answer four painless questions:
- What do you want to name your site?
- What will your site be about?
- What do you want to get out of your site?
- What is your skill level?
2) After you click continue, you’ll be asked what you want your URL web address to be. If you don’t want to pay, you can get a [your choice].wordpress.com. There are also options for paid premium services.
3) About half way done, see, fast and easy. After you pick your URL address you’ll need to pick a plan. Assuming you picked the free address you can click the start with free button
4) Next up, give an email address and pick a password, by default your username is the same as your web address, but you can pick a new one if you want and click continue. This is an easy enough step, but it’s even easier if you have a gmail account. If so, you can pick a user name and click the Continue with Google button
5) We’re almost ready to write. If you’re not used to it, once you sign in, try not to get too distracted by all the options. Just click the Add button next to the Blog posts option and the blog post editor will open up
6) Finally, just write! Formatting works like a simple word processing app and is pretty straightforward. When you’re done push the publish button
Tada! you just started blogging
