Where do you get your garden supplies
February 18, 2018 0 By MichaelIt seems we’re always shopping for garden supplies
It’s never ending and it doesn’t seem to matter what time of year. It could be the dead of winter or the drying heat of summer and we gardeners need garden supplies of some shape or form. Maybe the need comes from our insatiable list of gardening projects or maybe it comes from an unrelenting need to care for our plants.
Whatever drives us at whatever point in time, living in the 21st century has its perks. We now have the whole internet to help us find what garden supplies we need for whatever our task. It used to be that we had to buy a book, go to the library, attend an event or take a class to learn how, and then visit specialty resources to find whatever garden supplies we needed. Now, we’ve got so many more options. Garden bloggers with every depth of background of every species, specialty and cultivar share their knowledge on the internet. We’ve got seed packet displays in almost every shop and there are garden supplies almost everywhere we look
So where do you shop for garden supplies ?
No judging. There’s lots of people with LOTS of opinions “must grow organic” “save the pollinators” “harvesting peat moss is bad” “Never support xxx store” we get it. It’s important to be mindful of the environment and economy. But it is also important that we support and inspire each other as gardeners. So, opinions suspended, judgement free. It’s okay if you shop by price, locale, love one stop big box retail, or promote the little guy. We’re not going to hammer you for buying GMO or inorganic pest control or fertilizer. That’s not what this is about. Where do you shop? Do you shop for garden supplies on amazon? We really want to hear about your experience so please comment or find us on twitter and let us know.
Is there someplace else you shop? Do you have a favorite home town garden center? Does your local supermarket, department store or home improvement center staff know you by name?
For us, it’s a little of everything. Farmer’s market, yep, nursery, check-a-rooney, supermarket, you bet your bippy, online, heck yea. We tend to shop around and weigh our options for bigger purchases, but we’re on the lookout wherever we go. A couple weeks ago, we bought an electric cultivator online on amazon for our expansion project in a couple more weeks we’re going to a shop here in Northern NJ for a roll of welded wire fencing (that took a bunch of research to find at a good price). We bought seeds and coir from the kiosk at the home improvement store to fill in what we were missing… it is everything from everywhere for us.
What’s on your shopping list for garden supplies? Are you saving up for a big buy?
What options do you weigh? Electric vs. Gas? 2-cycle vs 4-cycle? Galvanized vs plastic? Price? Shipping time? Are you the kind of person that has to touch and see things before you buy them or do you have your garden supply list preprogrammed into your echo or google home virtual assistant?
We used to never knew until we broke a tool or ran out of something that we’d even consider it, but these days we find ourselves planning ahead… a lot…
So… things on our garden supply list…
- 1/4 inch welded wire fencing
- T posts
- wheelbarrow
- plant stakes
- mulch
- aluminum wire
Since we’ve been planning and budgeting we can really make sure we’re getting what we want at a decent price.
